The main unit of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army commanded by President Kim Il Sung advanced into the Musan area of Korea in May 1939.
At that time, the Japanese imperialists had already caught wind of the KPRA’s presence in the homeland and sent out a large number of garrison and police troops to prepare a large-scale encirclement and search operation.
Based on grasping the enemy’s movements, Kim Il Sung made a tactical feint to slip away from their encirclement. It was the tactic to march along the 120 kilometres-long Kapsan-Musan guard road, which was newly built by the Japanese imperialists in the areas between Kapsan and Musan. It was a highway for emergency use to move their “punitive” forces by mobile means to any spot on short notice in case the KPRA pushed into Korea. As the project had been finished only recently, no authorized traffic was allowed.
The President explained his tactic and its feasibility to the officers as follows:
“Your own attitude proves that it is possible to march in broad daylight along the Kapsan-Musan guard road. When I suggested this plan you were stunned.
“The enemy, too, will never be able to imagine that a large KPRA unit would march along their specially-built guard road right in the middle of the day. This very fact makes it amply possible to carry out the march. Doing boldly what the enemy regards as impossible is a tactical guarantee of success in this move.”
On May 21, the KPRA unit, by applying the tactic of marching one thousand miles at a run, marched in fine array 40-km-long distance along the road in broad daylight. It reached Mupho on the Tuman River on that same day and pitched camp there. Later, it won a great victory in the battle in the Musan area.
The Japanese imperialists, who found out later that the guerrillas had marched in the daytime along their guard road, groaned in despair and called the march an “unprecedented oddity”.
