Much effort is being channelled into reclaiming land in the DPRK.
“Since the country has limited area of arable land, in order to increase grain output, it is essential to expand the area under cultivation while increasing the per-hectare yield by raising a wave of scientific farming,” said an official of the Ministry of Agriculture.
There are vast areas of land that remain idle and that can be brought under the plow in the country.
In recent years, many units including the youth workteam of the Chilli Farm in Sukchon County, South Phyongan Province, got rid of puddles and reed fields and rezoned patches of paddy and other fields in standardized shapes to increase the cultivated acreage.
According to statistics, hundreds of hectares of land have been added to the area under cultivation this year in the course of restoring and rearranging farmlands and rivers.
Land rezoning shock brigades expanded the arable land in several counties of North and South Hwanghae provinces by making fields standardized and rearranging rivers.
The relevant brigade working in North Hwanghae Province rezoned over 1 500 hectares of land in Hwangju and Yonsan counties and Songnim City in the spring so that rice could be transplanted there.
As a result, small paddy patches were replaced by standardized fields of 1 200-1 500 phyong in flat areas and those of 300-500 phyong in mountainous areas.
The April 22 land rezoning shock brigade restored over 1 600 hectares in the spring and reclaimed over 100 hectares of land in Jangphung County, North Hwanghae Province.
All the farmers turned out to reclaim even an inch of more land.
Some rural areas that were afflicted by floods in recent years made a detailed survey of land affected by the floods and landslides and are working to restore farmlands.
Kyonghung County of North Hamgyong Province rebuilt the dam of the Kyonghung Stream and reclaimed barren land to secure over 100 hectares of crop land, while Kumgang County of Kangwon Province rearranged a large area of gravelly land on the shore of the Kumchon River to reclaim dozens of hectares of land. Pochon County of Ryanggang Province reclaimed the tableland of the Sinhung area and Ryosu tableland to find over 10 hectares.
The Konsan Cooperative Farm in Sinchon County, South Hwanghae Province, is pushing a movement of making every farmer plant a thousand crop plants in unused land like the ridges between fields, the surroundings of the threshing ground and the roadsides.
