The Wonsan-Mt Kumgang international tourist zone has a good prospect for developing various themes of eco-tourism as it comprises highland, flatland, coast, inland, and animal and plant reserves.
The Mt Kumgang area is well known around the world as an aggregate of all scenic beauties of nature.
Such famous waterfalls and pools as Kuryong Falls, Pibong Falls and Upper Eight Pools can be found in the Kuryongyon area in the Outer Kumgang.
The beach between Wonsan and Kalma is being turned into a tourist hub and a costal park.
Ports, wharves, hotels, ships and general-service ships are to be built for the Wonsan-Mt Kumgang area for marine eco-tourism.
The area will be turned into parks covered with trees and flowers, and animal and plant reserves built there. Wonsan University of Agriculture will work as a sponsor and research centre for international academic seminars on ecological environment.
Masikryong Ski Resort also presents spectacular scenery. It has ten ski slopes running down 5 000 metres from the summit of Taehwa Peak, which is 1 363 metres above the sea.
Swan in Lagoon Chona, Kumran Cave, Alsom seabird breeding place in Thongchon, living monuments in the areas of Ullim Falls and Thongchon, constitute the main components for eco-tourism of the area.
In particular, Chongsokjong is one of the eight scenic attractions in the Kwandong district in Korea. Included in the Wonsan-Sogwang Temple tourist route are Chonsam Cooperative Farm in Anbyon County which is famous for the production of Anbyon persimmon, a speciality of Kangwon Province, Sogwangsa mineral water and Sogwang Temple.
