Newly-bred good varieties of crops have been registered as national agricultural crops and widely introduced into farms to meet the local conditions in the DPRK.
According to Ri Yun Sik, head of a department at the Academy of Agricultural Science, more than 60 varieties of dozens of crop species like rice, maize, red pepper, tomato, peach and grape were recently listed as national agrotypes.
The new varieties have strong resistance to such unfavourable natural and climate conditions as high temperature, drought, rainy season and cold weather and to harmful insects. And they produce high per-hectare yield and have good quality.
A new variety of rice can produce high and stable yield with the application of organic fertilizers and a new potato variety can yield 40-odd tons per hectare in the alpine regions of more than 800 metres above sea level as the main crop. They are the focus of attention among the farmers.
A new variety of watermelon is popular at greenhouses as it produces high yield and is highly resistant to low temperature and moisture.
