In Ryonggang County of Nampho, there is a Koguryo tomb with murals from the 5th century.
The large tomb in Ryonggang, whose chamber is arranged on the ground, was built with flat rubble stones, with its ceiling covered with a plain rock and its walls and ceiling plastered with lime.
The chamber consists of an inner passage, front compartment, corridor, two niches and an inner compartment.
There are two niches on both sides of the corridor leading from the front compartment to the inner compartment, and the walls and ceiling of the chamber had been full of murals whose most parts faded away. Pillars, headspaces and beams are painted on the four walls of the front and inner compartments to decorate them like rooms and, especially, beam and propping timber are also drawn above the headspace on the walls of the front compartment to make them look more lifelike.
Still remaining on the southern wall of the front compartment are a portrait and castle map.
There are three gate lofts on the castle map and the centre loft is a big two-storey high building with curving roof tiles, while the other two lofts at its both sides are low and small ones in the same kind as compared to that in the middle.
There are pavilions at each corner of the castle and ornaments on the roof ridge of the lofts and pavilions.
Walls are also roofed with curving tiles and the road to the inside of the castle is paved.
There are a picture of phoenix on the western wall of the inner compartment, and those of birds and patterns of cloud, lotus flower and firework on the ceiling.
The tomb offers a lot of information for studying the social relationship, castle, architecture and painting of Koguryo.
