Pyongyang College of Urban Management has developed a program that recognizes tree species by their leaves.

“One of the important things in urban greening is to plant various species of trees. In order to plant trees with better features, it is needed to recognize tree species by their leaves and fertilize and tend them according to their ecological properties,” said lead developer Ji Myong Hyok, lecturer at the college.

To solve that problem, the developers decided to write the broadleaved tree recognition program.

“As the first step, we carried out an extensive survey on major broadleaved trees in Pyongyang,” said lecturer So Won Nam.

The survey was conducted by the method of finding out the species and number of broadleaved tall trees at roadsides and in parks and recreation grounds and analysing and evaluating their utilization rate in urban greening.

On the basis of this, they decided on search terms for the research into morphological characteristics of tree leaves and acquired detailed data about new tree species as well as widely applied species in urban greening.

The search terms include the phyllotaxis, kind, crotch, shape, edge, base, apex, vein and size of leaves.

When the user selects a leaf, the program recognizes it with high accuracy and displays its species and relevant data in detail.

According to So, the program contains all the information about over a hundred species of broadleaved trees.

It was already introduced to Pyongyang University of Agriculture and district landscaping and greening stations in Pyongyang.
