Forests for medicinal purpose have newly been created in well over a hundred hectares in Pyongyang.
“The municipal administration channelled concentrated efforts into creating medicinal tree forests of high economic value,” said an official from the Pyongyang Municipal People’s Committee.
It chose the right soils for creating the medicinal forests and planted hawthorn, Chinese magnoliavine and other medicinal tree saplings which were provided by public health establishments and the tree nursery of medicinal herb management stations.
Its primary concern in this effort was to ensure a high rooting rate of the saplings.
It also ensured that technical requirements of medicinal tree planting were exactly met in such processes as digging holes, planting and watering. Plastic sheets were spread around the trees after watering in order to reduce the evaporation from the surface of the soil, and water dropping bottles were placed at the lower part of the trunks of trees in order to help them survive droughts.
Kangdong County planted tens of thousands of medicinal tree saplings of various species including hawthorn and Chinese gutta-percha in over 100 hectares. According to a member of the county people’s committee, the rooting rate of the trees planted in the county were guaranteed at over 90 percent.
