Worldwide food crisis gives rise to serious concern

According to information released by the UN, a minimum of 820 million people are estimated to be famished worldwide as of June, of which 244 million are under five.

The executive director of the World Food Programme said that the world is now faced with the pandemic and serious famine crisis. He added that the ongoing natural disaster and climate change, the assault of desert locust flocks and armed conflict would lead to the worst humanitarian crisis since the Second World War this year.

Flood, typhoon and other natural disasters that occur frequently in all parts of the world are the major factor in wrecking food security.

In August alone, diverse disasters played havoc with 30 558 000 hectares of crops in China, while crop damage suffered by India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other Asian nations is also huge.

In southern Africa, unheard-of food shortage has resulted in the plight in which 45 million people should receive emergency food aid due to the effect of drought, flood and other natural disasters and the deterioration of the economy.

The unprecedented disaster caused by the flocks of desert locusts which swept African and Asian regions further deteriorated the food crisis.

As of late February, the desert locust flocks inflicted great damage on 20-odd countries, from West Africa, East Africa and the Near East to South Asia.

The East African region, where over 20 million people had already suffered food scarcity, sustained the severest damage from it. In Ethiopia, no harvest is reportedly expected in nearly 200 000 hectares of crops, plunging more than a million people into food shortage.

Experts say that food price will rise and food crisis will worsen in East Africa.

It is said that the locusts devoured a great deal of crops in Iran, India and Uzbekistan.

Over 20 million people are suffering from food shortage in Yemen, where a civil war has dragged on for years, more than 10 million in Afghanistan and some 9.3 million in Syria.

In South Sudan, 6.5 million people equivalent to more than half of its population are distressed by food shortage. In its eastern region alone, the recent armed conflict has left 60 000 on the verge of starvation.
