Rimyongsu Falls, a national natural monument.
Rimyongsu Falls are located in Samjiyon, Ryanggang Province.
The waterfall flows in lots of streams like rolls of silk hanging over the right cliff of Rimyongsu Valley which was formed by the erosion of basalt that was thrown up during the volcanic eruption of Mt Paektu a million years ago.
It is a rare cascade where subterranean water gushes out of cracks in rocks. Nine main streams run against the raised parts of rocks to form sprays of beads and flow into the artificial lake of the Rimyongsu Barrage.
A pavilion stands above the falls, black rocks are seen between streams, the lake below is crystal clear and they all blend in so well with the surrounding forests. On sunny days a rainbow is cast through the spray from the waterfall.
Azalea blossoms in spring, green forests in summer and crimson foliage in autumn are reflected on the waterfall and lake to offer unique lovely sights, but the most breathtaking scene unfolds in winter.
Even in freezing cold winter, the water temperature of the falls does not go down to below 4oC and therefore streams flow down between icicles and hoar frost forms on surrounding trees to provide enchanting views.
