Pohyon Temple is in Mt. Myohyang, one of the six celebrated mountains of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The Pohyon Temple represents the architecture of Korea in the early 11th century and it is of great artistic value.
It was named after Buddha called Samantabhadra in Buddhism. It was built in 1042 and later, rebuilt several times through a long time. The existing main buildings of the Pohyon Temple were rebuilt between 1441 and 1775.
At that time, the Pohyon Temple was recognized as the biggest one in the northwestern region of the country and a centre of Buddhism in the area north of the River Chongchon.
Seen in the district of main buildings are old buildings such as the Taeung and Kwanum Halls and relics and remains including a square 9-storey pagoda and an octagonal 13-storey pagoda.
The Pohyon Temple tells a story about the patriotic struggle of the Korean ancestors such as Saint Sosan, a famous commander of monk soldiers during the Imjin Patriotic War between 1592 and 1598.
The Pohyon Temple of Mt. Myohyang is kept well as a precious architectural legacy.
