March 2 is the Arbor Day in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. On the day the great leader
Kim Il Sung
lit the first torch of the tree-planting movement.
He climbed Moran Hill on March 2, Juche 35(1946), the year after Korea was liberated from the Japanese imperialist colonial rule.
Moran Hill was called so, because the peaks resemble a peony which has just been open. Since ancient times it has been a pride of Pyongyang with thick green woods and all sorts of flowers.
But
Kim Il Sung
saw the hill which was completely devastated to be almost bare.
Walking about the hill which lost its original looks, he felt heartrending.
He said with indignation: In old times there were many trees on Moran Hill. The Japanese imperialists occupied our country and cut down the trees on Moran Hill at random.
And he told officials to plant many trees and flowers on Moran Hill.
That day, he stressed the need to build up Moran Hill into a good cultural recreation centre of the people and gave important instructions on planting trees across the country.
From the historic day the tree-planting movement was conducted as an all-people campaign in the DPRK.
