Deceptiveness of "Civil Administration" Revealed through Suppression

Date: 09/06/2021 | Source: Voice of Korea (EN) | Read original version at source

95 years has passed since the June 10 Independence Movement in Korea.  Many years lapsed, but the Korean people do not forget the criminal atrocities of the Japanese imperialists who barbarically suppressed their anti-Japanese patriotic struggle.  The anti-Japanese sentiments of the Korean people reached the extreme in the mid-1920s.  As they faced a serious crisis of colonial rule in Korea with the March 1 Popular Uprising in 1919 as a momentum, the Japanese imperialists advocated a "civil administration" instead of the barbaric military administration. But their heinous colonial rule, in essence, remained unchanged and became more cunning and vicious.  Just at the time, Sunjong, the last emperor of the feudal Joson dynasty, died in April 1926. With it as an occasion, the anti-Japanese sentiments of the Korean people got more violent.  The anti-Japanese spirit of the Korean people mounted and an anti-Japanese demonstration was being prepared in Kyongsong (today's Seoul) on the occasion of the funeral of Sunjong. Grasping the situation, the Japanese imperialists made vicious efforts to suppress it.  A lot of police force and army troops from provinces were hurled to Kyongsong to lay a strict cordon and the marines of four cruisers anchoring in Inchon disembarked for standby under the pretext of "guards of honour".  All sorts of evil laws including the "law on the maintenance of public order" were invoked and members of the committee for preparing demonstrations and "those on the blacklist" were arrested.  On June 10, the day of funeral of Emperor Sunjong, the Japanese imperialists deployed 5 to 6 armed policemen at every telegraph-pole along the road for his bier to pass through and sited cannons and machine guns for so-called "cannon salute", threatening the Korean people. However, such threat and blackmail could not dampen the increasing anti-Japanese tendency.  Here is Researcher Yang Kwi Song at the History Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences.  "On June 10, 1926, Kyongsong witnessed an anti-Japanese demonstration staged by tens of thousand people from all walks of life chanting the slogans 'Long Live Korea's Independence!' and 'The Japanese Troops, Go Back!'.  The deceptiveness of the 'civil administration' by the Japanese imperialists was revealed through their barbaric suppression of the June 10 Independence Movement.  The Japanese imperialists mobilized more than 4,000 mounted police force and hundreds of military policemen to suppress the demonstration and fired rifles and guns at the bare-handed peaceable demonstrators.  After all, more than 160 of the demonstrators were wounded and over 200 arrested and detained.  The Japanese imperialists harshly suppressed mass demonstrations in other regions as well.    The suppression of the June 10 Independence Movement showed all over the world the craftiness and viciousness of the 'civil administration'."  Untold are the misfortunes and sufferings undergone by the Korean nation under the colonial rule of the Japanese imperialists.  This notwithstanding, however, the Japanese reactionaries are still playing cheap tricks to cover up their tremendous immoral crimes.  They cannot efface the history no matter how hard they may resort to all tricks to embellish their past crimes.
