Scent of roses pervades capital city

Beautiful roses are now in full bloom in every part of Pyongyang including the banks of the Taedong River, Ryomyong Street, Mirae Scientists Street, flower parks and even the compounds of industrial establishments.

Various kinds of roses grow in flower beds or in the middle of lawns in perfect harmony with the layouts of streets. Gates are also seen ornately decorated with roses.

Red roses that flower in group on the fragrant bushes over the green lawn give viewers a feeling of strong passion in summer season, highlighting a sharp contrast between red and green colours, and dewy light pink roses enable them to enjoy fresh and soft beauty.

Charmed by the full-blown roses, people pose for photographs against the background of the flowers or enjoy smelling their sweet fragrance.

According to a section chief of the Pyongyang Floriculture Institute, the institute has registered more than 10 varieties of roses which were acclimatized to the local conditions as state species and sent over 100 000 rose plants to hundreds of units in recent years.

Most of them are Rose No. 1, Red rose No. 2 and Flowerbed rose No. 2, rose varieties whose flowers are over 10 cm across. They are widely used as cut flowers and for flower beds and pots.

“Rose petals contain vitamins E and K good for skincare, as well as other vitamins C and A and oestrogen in large amount. So they are effective for the treatment of women’s diseases and skin protection. Lots of women visit our house everyday,” said Pang Jong Chol, manager of Rose House on Mirae Scientists Street.

Not only roses but all other flowers have come into full bloom on the streets.

Citizens exchange warm greetings with gardeners growing beautiful flowers as they pass by the streets.

It is an unusual scene presented by beautiful roses.

“Many passers-by thank us for our services of tending flowers and often ask how to cultivate them. At that time, I feel as if I were a teacher and have a great pride in my job,” said Kim Il Sin, an employee of the floricultural farm in Phyongchon District.
