Distance education in the DPRK, which had only dozens of courses, has been expanded to an education system with hundreds of them.
According to Kim Jong Hak, a department director of the Education Commission, thousands of industrial establishments have joined the online education system run by scores of universities, including Kim Il Sung University, Kim Chaek University of Technology, Pyongyang University of Architecture, Phyongsong University of Coal Mining Industry and Sariwon Kye Ung Sang University of Agriculture, throughout the country over the past ten years.
Kim Il Sung University, which serves as a hub of distance education in the sector of social sciences, has worked out the education programme on a higher level and is putting efforts into making the teaching contents and methods practical, comprehensive and up-to-date.
Kim Chaek University of Technology which contributed to informatizing distance education of the country by developing a remote intelligent education management system, Pyongyang University of Mechanical Engineering, Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences, Wonsan University of Agriculture and others are now regularly operating the online unified education system in close contact with relevant universities and colleges.
As it closely integrates education with production practices, the online education system has produced lots of inventors, notably a technician of the Rangnang Disabled Soldiers’ Essential Plastic Goods Factory who has put forward more than 50 technical innovation plans conducive to revitalizing production and modernizing equipment and a workteam leader of the Pyongyang General Printing Plant who came up with several inventions and technical findings for improving the quality of prints.
In the DPRK, everyone can be enrolled on any online courses they desire, including students of institutions of higher learning and those in service after receiving higher education as well as graduates of senior middle schools, irrespective of age, length of service and type of occupation.
