Recorded in the history of the capital city construction of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was the "Period of Prosperity of Pyongyang" which was the period of creation and change.

In the period between the mid-1970s and the 1980s many monumental creations were built in the capital city Pyongyang--Kim Il Sung Stadium, the Tower of the Juche Idea, the Arch of Triumph, the Grand People's Study House, the Ice Rink, the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital, the Changgwang Health Complex, the Chongryu Restaurant, the May Day Stadium, Pyongyang Department Store No. 1 and so on.

The Korean people still remember the immortal exploits of the great leader Kim Jong Il who built Pyongyang into the capital for the people by ushering in the period of prosperity of capital city construction.

Kim Jong Il conceived a plan to build Pyongyang City into a magnificent paradise of people good to live in, a city becoming the character and appearance of the capital with the great leader Kim Il Sung.

He directed primary efforts to erecting a bronze statue of Kim Il Sung in the capital and building grand monuments and monumental edifices to glorify his greatness and revolutionary exploits.

Under his leadership, the bronze statue of Kim Il Sung was erected on Mansu Hill overlooking Pyongyang City and grand monuments in praise of his exploits were built in the places associated with his revolutionary exploits.

Kim Jong Il energetically led the capital city construction, saying he would launch a speed campaign in the construction of Pyongyang City and thus record the period of prosperity of Pyongyang in the history of Pyongyang.

He opened the prelude to the period of prosperity of Pyongyang with the construction of the Mansudae Art Theatre and Ragwon Street and gave meticulous guidance to changing the centre of Pyongyang as befitting the capital of the revolution.

Thanks to his original idea on architecture and energetic leadership, the centre of the capital was completely face-lifted in the latter half of the 1980s and in those days there was a new change in the city construction, which broke the ready-made custom and old patterns.

As a result, a number of modern streets and scores of monumental creations were completed in the capital Pyongyang in 15 years.

More than 30 years has passed since then.

The undying exploits of Kim Jong Il written in the history of the capital city construction are shining forever, along with the appearance of Pyongyang which is changing day by day under the wise leadership of the respected Kim Jong Un.
