Moran Hill dressed in white

January is midwinter in Pyongyang.

Cold winter gales whistled as they rushed through leafless tree branches a few days ago, but now they are covered in snow as if wearing thick-wadded coats.

At the time when the white snow glitters with lights in the morning sunshine, the scenery of Moran (peony) Hill in Pyongyang reminds viewers of a peony blossom floating on the Taedong River as the name says.

Photographers and artists climb the hill in haste to snap and represent in their works such beautiful snowscape presented by nature.

Their favourite choices are pine trees which remain green even under the snow and historical relics including Choesung and Ulmil pavilions which inspire fresh feelings in good harmony with the trees.

Following them are young men and women who climb Moran Hill walking through the fresh snow and old persons who enjoy the beautiful scenery at the Choesung Pavilion, breathing in fresh mountain air.

Kang Won Ok living in Taedonggang District, Pyongyang, is one of the old persons who often climb the hill.

“The scenery of Moran Hill is good, but more spectacular is the bird’s eye view of Pyongyang you can command from the hill. Pyongyang has really changed a lot,” she said.

Snow-covered green pines, icicled waterfalls, the murmur of clear water flowing under the thick snow carpet, the twitter of birds and sparkling powder snow flying even in the light winds—these charming scenes are the beauties peculiar to winter.

“I climb Moran Hill to draw pictures every year. Its exquisite beauty in each season and each place always gives me great creative inspiration,” said Jong Mun Chol, lecturer at Pyongyang University of Fine Arts and Merited Artist.
