The scenery of Mt. Paektu, a celebrated mountain of Korea, is more beautiful because of the rhododendron blooming even in snow.
The rhododendron largely distributed in Mt. Paektu is called rhododendron in Mt. Paektu. It is also called yellow rhododendron because of its yellow flowers.
Rhododendron is an evergreen broad-leaved shrub belonging to Ericaceae.
It is said to have been named so, that is, Manbyongcho in Korean, because it is the medicinal materials curing all diseases.
The plant grows low and spreads laterally with many branches. Its leaves are coriaceous and come out in alternation at the ends of stalks. The leaf blade is elliptic or upside-down egg-shaped. It is 3 to 8 centimetres long and 1.5 to 2.5 centimetres wide. The leaf margin is in the turndown and rolled state. Flowers bloom in June and July and they are in the shape of azalea blossom. A flower has five petals and looks yellowish but it is so vivid enough to be conspicuous. The plant bears oval seedballs that ripen in dark brown towards August and September. Rhododendron grows well in the raging snowstorm and blooms beautifully even in snow. It is a plant which is conspicuous of the flora of Mt. Paektu and other highlands in the northern part of Korea. Its leaves are valuable materials for different kinds of medicines.
Rhododendron in Mt. Paektu has been designated as a living monument in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and it is under special custody.
