The tomb of the 25th king of Koryo has recently been unearthed in Haeson-ri, Kaesong.

The tomb was discovered about 1.2km southwest of the seat of Haeson-ri in the city.

It is divided into four sections by three terraced granite embankments.

There are a tomb mound with stone handrail facilities and a pair of stone posts in section No. 1 on the highest place, and there is a stone sculpture of figure respectively in sections Nos. 2 and 3 which get a step lower. There is an altar area in section No. 4.

The tomb chamber built with well-trimmed stones is 365cm long from south to north, 300cm wide from east to west and 235cm high.

There is a hole on the eastern wall of the chamber, which is seen in some tombs of couples and which was made in the belief that the “soul” of the dead comes in and out through it. And mural pieces which had been painted on the ceiling and walls of the grave were discovered on the floor.

Other finds include part of a gem-slab book recording the moral repute of a king or a queen during a feudal period and gilded ironware.

According to the DPRK Archaeology Society, the tomb belongs to a mausoleum-grade grave which was made in the 14th century in view of building style, scale and relics, and the tomb of Princess Anphyong (unearthed in 1979), wife of King Kyonghyo, was found 250-odd metres away from the east of the grave. Experts recognized in unison that the tomb can be seen as a mausoleum of the 25th king (1236-1308) of Koryo as Sinjungdonggukyojisungnam (Revised Handbook of Korean Geography) and other documents say that the Mausoleum of King Kyonghyo is located over four kilometres away from the west of the Kaesong region.
