Silk cloth is lighter, more graceful and softer to the touch than other cloths, and it is good for human health.
Koreans raised silkworms from olden times to obtain threads from them.
The fabrics made with the threads were widely known even to the neighbouring countries.
Silk production in Korea began to develop rapidly under the wise leadership of President Kim Il Sung after the liberation of the country on August 15, 1945.
The silk fabrics widely used by Koreans are those made with damask silk, polychromatic silk, rainbow-striped silk, sheer silk, foulard, etc.
Damask silk, a high-quality fabric peculiar to Korea, is characterized by its graceful colour and texture with one pattern. It is mainly used as a material for making quilts, wrappers and winter clothes.
Polychromatic silk cloth, a high-grade fabric made of various colour patterns with silkworm and coloured threads, is featured by embroidery on the ground texture.
Rainbow-striped silk cloth is a fabric woven with five- to seven-coloured silk threads by comparing the beauty of Korea, which has been called a silk-embroidered land of three thousand ri, to a rainbow.
Sheer silk cloth is a traditional cloth of Korea as it is light and porous with clear stripes.
Foulard, a fabric made with threads of various colours and patterns, is widely used for making women’s chima (skirt) and jogori (coat) for all seasons as it does not easily crease and is soft to the touch with good draping property.
In June Juche 43 (1954), Kim Il Sung examined the silk produced by the Nyongbyon Silk Mill. Noting that Nyongbyon is an area which boasts of famous Yaksandongdae and that Yaksan is abundant with azaleas, he named the silk cloth with azalea patterns Yaksan Silk and the cloth with graceful patterns like the Kuryong River, Kuryong Silk.
In addition, among the silk cloths in Korea are crepe fabrics including georgette, various plain and varied silk cloths, rungnaju, a fabric like damask and brocade woven with silk yarn, and various kinds of cloths with lattice patterns.
Silk mills equipped with the latest automatic silk-spinning machines and other silk mills furnished with modern jacquard machines turn out various kinds of quality silk fabrics which are in wide use for producing several kinds of silk dresses, bedclothes and quilts.
