New vegetable varieties and cultivation techniques developed, innovation made in production

The Pyongyang Vegetable Science Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Science has registered over 70 varieties of vegetables as national ones and established new cultivation techniques for the past ten years to produce a large amount of greenhouse vegetables every year, contributing to improving the people’s dietary life.
The institute succeeded in acclimatizing different functional vegetables to the climatic and soil conditions of the country and employed bioengineering technology to breed vegetable varieties, including bok choy, greenhouse cucumber, yellow sweet pepper and Hibiscus esculentus, which are high in productivity and rich in vitamins, carbohydrates and minerals while reducing the breeding period as compared to before.
An automatic nutritious solution supply system was researched and introduced in hydroponic greenhouses so as to provide a guarantee for raising their economic effectiveness.
The institute achieved hundreds of research results including a nutrition diagnosis technique which can diagnose nutritious conditions of vegetables in time and ensure their normal growth.
Cultivators produced and sent large amounts of fresh vegetables to the orphanage, baby home and other facilities in Pyongyang every year by distributing crops properly and ensuring scientific and rational management of nutrition, environment, plant and blight.
While helping build greenhouses across the country, the institute has made a substantial push to the dissemination of sci-tech information about vegetable growing.
