The people across the DPRK enjoyed Jongwoldaeborum or the First Full Moon Day on February 5.

The folk holiday which comes after lunar New Year’s Day has been celebrated by the Korean people every year from olden times as an occasion of wishing for good luck and good crops in the New Year.

Marking the holiday, artistes of the Phibada Opera Troupe gave a music and dance performance at the Pyongyang Grand Theatre while those of the National Acrobatic Troupe staged an acrobatic performance at the Pyongyang Circus Theatre. The songs and dance pieces which were overflowing with national sentiment and flavour and the distinctive and impressive acrobatic pieces filled the audiences with deep admiration.

Pyongyang citizens visited the Rangnang Museum and had a pleasant time playing various kinds of folk games.

While many of them visited the museum to see historical relics, the outdoor folk game ground of the museum was swarming with people who came to compete in ssirum (Korean wrestling) and archery.

In the meantime, others measured their wits in the games of paduk (go) and janggi (Korean chess) in the indoor folk game ground, which were as spectacular as those outside.

The public-catering service network including restaurants served various kinds of traditional dishes, while the Munsu Water Park, People’s Open-air Ice Rink and other leisure centres in the capital city were crowded with working people full of delight and optimism.

At every household, people relished national foods such as ogokpap (boiled rice mixed with four other staple cereals) and dishes made of nine kinds of dried greens and had a happy time playing such folk games as janggi and yut (four-stick) game.

Amusement activities were held in the Sariwon city folk park.

Along with different kinds of performances, children played such folk games as knee fight, shuttlecock kicking, top spinning, rope-skipping and tug of war.

However, the most spectacular game was kite-flying. Kites in different shapes and decorations flew up into the sky swishing their tails in reflection of the children’s desire to go up higher and farther, which added colour to the festive mood.

The Chongjin pleasure ground management station provided a special horse-riding service on the folk holiday.

As darkness set in, people were out to enjoy the full moon on Moran Hill and the Ryongwang Pavilion, in Kyongru-dong, on Songhwa Street and in other places of Pyongyang and different parts of the country including new modern rural villages.

Enjoying the traditional holiday of Jongwoldaeborum, the Korean people wished for prosperity of the country and happiness of their families.
