Chairman Kim Jong Il inspected many units of the Korean People’s Army in his lifetime.
His inspection tours recorded numerous anecdotes showing the unbreakable blood ties between him, the Supreme Commander of the KPA, and his soldiers.
It happened one March night in Juche 85 (1996) when he returned from his inspection tour of the outpost of Mt Taedok on the frontline.
KPA commanding officers earnestly asked him to refrain from going to the frontline in the future.
After a deep thought for a while as if picturing the soldiers on Mt Taedok, he told them as follows: A large number of my sons and daughters are now defending the frontline of the country. I have to acquaint myself with their military service in defence of the frontline, and encourage them. To this end, I should inspect the frontline areas.
My sons and daughters! These words represented his loving care for soldiers.
Once, during his visit to a KPA unit, he dropped in at a radio lecture room to have a talk with a soldier unceremoniously.
He kindly asked about the soldier’s age and height, but the latter was quite at a loss how to reply. Patting him on the back, Kim Jong Il said: Relax yourself. The Supreme Commander is not an extraordinary man, so you do not need to lose your composure but treat me as you would do your close friend. The Supreme Commander, too, came from among the people and is one who shares weal and woe with soldiers. I am on intimate terms with them and lend my ears even to their whispers.
Then, the soldier answered him bravely.
During his inspection of a KPA unit located on the frontline, Kim Jong Il paid close attention to the soldiers’ living. He said to KPA commanding officers as follows: Ours are genuine revolutionary soldiers who devote their hopeful youthful days faithfully with rifles in their hands at the posts for national defence far away from their home villages and parents. It is a natural duty and obligation of officers to take good care of their living.
Under such loving care and affection of Kim Jong Il , the KPA service personnel have grown up into those strong in ideology and faith who sincerely support and follow their leader.
