One day in October 1945, shortly after Korea was liberated from the Japanese imperialists’ military occupation, Comrade Kim Il Sung (April 15, 1912-July 8, 1994) visited the Kangson Steel Plant (the present-day Chollima Steel Complex).
He got together with workers in an office. Grasping the hand of a worker sitting at his side, Kim Il Sung said sadly that his hands were quite big and that he could see that he must have suffered from hard labour from his childhood as his knuckles were thick and the palms were callous.
Then he acquainted himself in detail with how many employees and electric furnaces there were in the plant.
Before they fled after defeat in the war, the Japs switched off the electric furnace with molten iron in it, turning it into a big lump of iron. They also severely destroyed the blooming and crude steel workshops and other production lines of the plant, and burned all technical documents down.
On hearing about this, Kim Il Sung asked the officials and workers of the plant what they were doing at present.
An official of the plant told him that they were waiting for the country to take over it and adopt relevant measures while protecting its machinery and equipment against bad elements and fraudulent dealers.
Kim Il Sung , looking at the official affectionately, said: Our country has been liberated once and for all from the colonial rule of the Japanese imperialists and all of you have become masters of the country and factories; here masters are just you and you are the masters shouldering the destiny of the liberated country; our working class is the pillar and cornerstone of new Korea.
After a while, he said that whether to build the liberated Korea into a prosperous democratic, sovereign and independent state or not depends on how the workers of the plant struggle and that what they have to do now is to restore the factory, instead of merely guarding it.
Then he instructed the workers the ways for rebuilding the plant, adding that they should demonstrate the might of the working class of the liberated Korea by rehabilitating the plant and producing steel with their own efforts as soon as possible.
In response to his ardent appeal, the workers of the plant performed a miracle of rebuilding electric furnace No. 1 and starting to produce molten iron on December 20 that year.
