Ever-Increasing U.S. Unemployment Rate and Suicide Rate

CNBC reported that the number of workers fired during the first quarter of the year amounts to more than 270,000 as the U.S. enterprises adopt an austerity measure to evade financial loss triggered off by the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank which took a measure to increase interest rate sharply under the pretext of preventing the high inflation rate.

The figure has reportedly reached an all-time high since the outbreak of the global pandemic and is 4.8-times higher compared to 55,496 in the first quarter of last year. CNBC predicts steady increase in the number throughout the year.

The U.S. weekly Time concurred with CNN in reporting that the suicide rate within the U.S., temporarily on the decrease during the early stages of the global pandemic, has started to show an upward trend again. The report went on as follows:

National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) released a report on the American suicide rate based on the analysis of data collected between 2001 and 2021. The suicide rate showed an upward trend between 200l and 2018 but started to decrease for two consecutive years since 2019. In 2021, however, the suicide rate rose by 4% among men and women of all ages – an all-time high in terms of annual increase in the rate since 2001.

Subsequently, suicide was elevated to 11 th in major causes of death in the States – one step upward from the last year’s.

More concerned is the fact that juvenile suicide rate continues to rise, despite the temporary decrease in the overall rate during the early stages of global pandemic.

The suicide rate of 10 to 14-year-old girls, once recorded the lowest, now marks the sharpest increase between 2001 and 2021, and, during the same period, the suicide rate among 15 to 24-year-old women continuously increased to reach nearly a double figure.

Experts say that the reversion of suicide rate to the original trend of increase, after two years of decrease, is attributable to return to work and to schools, coupled with the stress-based factors - typical factors in the previous suicides.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) informed that the domestic suicides increased by 32% during the past 20 years; the suicide rate, recorded as decreased between 2019 and 2020, shows a sudden upward trend – a four percent increase between 2020 and 2021.

The CDC announced as follows:

The overall domestic suicide rate in 2021 is fourteen out of every 100,000; the total number is over 48,100 with 38,300-odd male and 9,800-odd female. And the majority of the recent attempted suicides –who are now in hospitals – are teenagers. Teenage schoolgirls especially attempted suicides – one out of three.

In this connection, experts comment as follows:

Given that the suicide rate temporarily reduced between 2019 and 2020, it is difficult to say that the recent drastic increase in the rate is attributable to global pandemic crisis.
