Japan Must Immediately Abandon Its Criminal Attempt to Discharge Nuclear Waste Water

Japanese government is attracting soaring criticism and opposition both at home and abroad as it persists in its plan to discharge the nuclear waste water of Fukushima nuclear power plant within this year.

Japanese fishermen are putting up strong resistance to their government and Tokyo Electric Power Holding Incorporation for their plan to unilaterally discharge the nuclear waste water, abandoning the promises they made several times that they would not discharge the nuclear waste water without seeking understanding from the concerned parties.

A person in fishery business in Iwaki city of Fukushima prefecture deplored that the livelihood of fishermen cannot be restored to the original state, once the nuclear waste water is discharged into the sea, and blamed the government for its insufficient explanation and improvised policy.

Moreover, mayors in Fukushima prefecture held a meeting and agreed to adopt a special resolution on the coming May 11. The resolution, reflecting the general will of the 77 cities in the 6 prefectures of Tohoku region, would call for the government to make a positive response to obtain the consent from the people.

Currently, more than 40% of the Japanese population oppose the plan of their government to discharge the nuclear waste water, and more than 90% of them have acknowledged that it will bring negative impact, and protests continue unabated. Such facts clearly reflect the public sentiments in Japan.

Meanwhile, the neighboring countries are also on the close lookout for Japan’s attempt to discharge nuclear waste water.

China warned that Japan’s decision to discharge nuclear waste water will bring an unimaginable danger to the global marine environment and the lives of humankind.

China also made a strong assertion that Japan should fulfil its international duty faithfully by discharging the nuclear waste water in an open, transparent and safe manner.

The China-Russia joint declaration released on March 21, also expressed a serious concern over Japan’s plan to discharge the nuclear waste water and demanded that Japan should accept the long-time surveillance of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and relevant countries, and protect the marine environment as well as the people’s “health-related rights and interests” in respective countries in an efficient way.

At the G7 Meeting of Ministers in charge of Climate, Energy and Environment held in mid-April, Japan schemed to mislead the public opinion as if it had won support from the member states for discharging nuclear waste water but it ended up with a tragicomedy. They have refuted Japan’s assertion, saying that “Japan’s discharging of waste water is not welcome.”

According to a poll carried out by one country, 93.21% of world people expressed strong opposition to Japan’s discharging of nuclear waste water.

In particular, with regards to Japan’s assertion that it has decontaminated most of 60-odd kinds of radioactive nuclides contained in the nuclear waste water, 90.28% of the respondents in the poll replied that it lacks credibility, and 86.45% of them criticized Japan for the disposal of the radioactive waste water, saying that it is unscientific and is not transparent.

Japan should not turn a blind eye to the serious concern from the international community, and abandon its criminal attempt to discharge the nuclear waste water at once.
