U.S. Double Standards Blamed for G7 Division

Date: 21/11/2023 | Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EN) | Read original version at source

The Global Times recently published an article denouncing the double standards of the U.S. in regard to the adoption of a joint statement reflecting the armed conflict between Palestine and Israel at the meeting of the G7 foreign ministers in Tokyo.

The Global Times carried that after the White House failed to persuade Israel over the Palestine-Israel armed conflict, Washington has found itself in an increasingly awkward position, unable to bridge the gaps among its closest allies. It continued as follows:

An insubstantial joint statement which was released at the meeting of the G7 foreign ministers will be of little actual help to solve the crisis but reflects allies' growing distrust in Washington.

The statement has little substantial content that would actually help the humanitarian disaster or de-escalate the tension, but is only a reiteration of previous appeals.

While Blinken has called on G7 members to "come together in the face of this crisis and to speak, as we do, with one clear voice," the group of rich nations find itself divided by the war.

At last month's UN General Assembly, France was the only G7 country to support a resolution calling for an "immediate and sustained" break in the war and condemning "all acts of violence aimed at Palestinian and Israeli civilians". Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK abstained while the U.S. voted against.

The Global Times concluded that the primary cause of this division is the double standards of the U.S., as seen in the sharp contrast in its attitude toward Ukraine and Palestine.
