Koguryo was the strongest country in the Korean history. It existed between 277 B.C. and A.D. 668.
In the period of its existence, Koguryo transferred its capital several times.
The transfer of the capital to Pyongyang in 427, in particular, was an event that exerted a great influence on the historical development of Korea.
Doctor and Associate Professor Kang Se Gwon, Section Chief of the History Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences, says:
"Pyongyang was the capital of Ancient Joson for thousands of years, during which it was developed politically, economically and culturally. So it had conditions favourable for strengthening the national power of Koguryo. For the purpose, Koguryo transferred its capital to Pyongyang in 427."
A historical document on the temporary transfer of the capital to Pyongyang by Koguryo in 247 says that originally, Pyongyang was the home of the founder-king, which means the place where the founder-king Tangun of Ancient Joson lived, i.e. the capital of Ancient Joson. Therefore, the transfer of the capital to Pyongyang was not for pioneering Pyongyang. It can be described as a return to Pyongyang, once the capital of Ancient Joson, i.e. the ancestral capital. Furthermore, it was as good as an official declaration that Koguryo succeeded to Ancient Joson.
The transfer of the capital to Pyongyang by Koguryo in 427 is an important event which preserved the legitimacy of the history of the Korean nation and clarified the succession of the national states of Korea.
