A research group of Kim Il Sung University has developed an identification system of crop blights and weeds.
The system is a smart phone app which identifies species on the basis of photos of blights and weeds taken with a smart phone and indicates their characteristics and extermination measures.
In the past, the identification of blights and weeds and their extermination could be done by some technicians possessing special knowledge.
Therefore, it was impossible to discriminate in time new kinds of blights or weeds appearing in all the fields of a farm and take relevant measures.
To solve the problem, the intelligent science institute of the Information Science Faculty of Kim Il Sung University set an ambitious goal of developing an information system with high speed and identification accuracy of blights and weeds and intensified research into it.
In collaboration with scientists of the agricultural informatization institute of the Academy of Agricultural Science, they collected hundreds of thousands of photos of blights and weeds in farms situated in the suburbs of Pyongyang and common knowledge about them as well.
On the basis of it, the research group developed an app for the system.
When users take photos of blights on stems, leaves and fruits of crops or weeds in paddy and dry fields with smart phones in the near distance, the app immediately displays their names, features and extermination methods so that farmers can easily discriminate them and take measures for exterminating them.
As it has the functions for keeping the log of date, place and record of the photographs of blights and weeds and reading the common knowledge of them that damage domestic crops, it helps gather information on the appearance of blights and weeds in each field and acquire wide-ranging knowledge of them.
According to Ri Kwang Chol, director of the institute, the system is capable of identifying well over a hundred blights and 50-odd kinds of weeds growing in paddy and non-paddy fields, which damage cereals, vegetables, fruits and industrial crops, with an accuracy of more than 90 percent and can be easily used with simple operation even under diverse field conditions.
