Pyongyang Subway, called underground Pyongyang, is being facelifted along with the changing looks of Pyongyang, the capital city of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The interiors of Kaeson, Ponghwa, Sungni, Jonu, Jonsung, Kwangbok and other stations have been decorated with high-quality stone materials and dazzling chandeliers and arranged afresh according to their themes, with the platforms air-conditioned and rooms renovated for users to have access to various information technology and books.
The project for their renovation is associated with the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un ’s painstaking efforts.
At midnight on November 19, Juche 104 (2015), he went to Kaeson Station of the Pyongyang Subway to oversee the trial run of a prototype subway train.
Entering its ground station, he warmly shook hands with greeting officials and said that he was there to take a ride of a new subway train.
While heading for its underground station, he stopped in the middle of the stairway connecting the corridor to the underground platform and looked around it.
At that time, there were some shortcomings in the station as it had been too long since the construction of the subway and its renovation and repair had not been made in time.
After looking up at the domed roof for a while, he said to the officials that the ceiling seemed too high, and underscored the need to revise the designs of subway stations so as to lower the platform’s ceiling and install benches between its pillars and TV sets as in the airport terminal.
While making a round trip between Kaeson Station and Yonggwang Station, he gave precious instructions on the issues arising in the improvement of the train’s performance and the management and operation of the subway.
Accordingly, a long-term plan for renovating all the subway stations was worked out.
After the renovation of Kaeson Station in May Juche 108 (2019), other stations began to be facelifted one after another.
