More than 20 years ago, Kim Un Hwa graduated from Nampho University of Education and became a teacher at her alma mater Segil Senior Middle School in Kangso District, Nampho City.
As she majored in vocal music, she was assigned to take charge of the school’s music group.
At first she was so confident because she had her own perspective on vocal music education. After some time, however, she found that her teaching method wasn’t working as she hoped.
Students were all different in age, capability, personality and hobby. What posed a big challenge was a lack of her knowledge of accompaniment and instrumental music.
One day, she was watching a video recording of a grand mass gymnastics and artistic performance. Gymnastics, dance, background flashcards and illumination were all incorporated into the scene of the performance. An idea flickered through her mind: How about adopting such a method. She felt like it was plausible.
The following day, she began to produce multimedia presentations and visual aids for the teaching.
Meanwhile, she tried hard to build up her capacity, visiting her university teachers to learn about how to direct instrumental music and accompaniment. In the course of this, she and her students grew together and they won prizes at national schoolchildren’s art festivals.
In addition, Choe Tae Gon, ten-year-old student of the music group, was honoured to perform a jotae (fife) solo in front of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un when he visited the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren’s Palace on New Year’s Day in 2024.
Kim Un Hwa has won the title of October 8 Model Teacher and received scores of certificates of registration of new teaching methods and invention of experimental apparatuses and teaching aids.
She was also honoured to take part in the 14th National Conference of Teachers and have a photo taken with Kim Jong Un .
“I think there’s no student without talent. What matters is that we teachers should be capable of finding and cultivating it,” she said.
