The UN Environment Programme released a report on March 27 to express concern that the worldwide waste of food has reached a level of warning.
According to the report, 1.05 billion tons of food were wasted worldwide in 2022, which accounts for one-fifth of the total food consumption.
In particular, 60% of the food waste was caused by households and foods amounting to about 1 billion meals are wasted by them on average in the world every day.
The situation gets more serious due to high temperature caused by climate change and lack of refrigeration facilities and is not limited only to developed countries.
It is a tragedy of the world that the waste of food increases with each passing day when 783 million people are starving and 150 million children are suffering developmental disorders due to malnutrition every year, the report said.
It hampers the international efforts to eradicate hunger, poverty and environmental pollution, it added.
