A spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry at a press conference on May 23 decried the US’ interference in China’s internal affairs.
He said that China resolutely opposes the US’ interference in the Taiwan issue in any form and under any pretext, in connection with the fact that the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US House of Representatives said that he would visit Taiwan.
The US’ behaviour constitutes a serious violation of the “one China” principle and the stipulations of the three joint communiques between China and the US, an infringement on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China and a seriously wrong signal to the forces seeking the “independence of Taiwan”, he said.
China urged the US to stop visiting Taiwan and refrain from aggravating the situation in the Taiwan Strait, he added.
If the US keeps having its own way, it will wholly be responsible for all the consequences to be entailed by that, he warned.
