There is a large reed production base in Sindo County, North Phyongan Province on the west coast of the Democratic People’s Republic Korea.
For many years, the place consisting of Mumyongphyong and other several islets had remained abandoned. It was turned into the country’s leading reed producer as they were linked by a 40-odd-kilometre embankment.
Here is an episode of a “silk island”.
One June day in Juche 47 (1958), President Kim Il Sung visited Sindo County.
Looking over the reed fields for a good while aboard a ship, he said to the accompanying officials that reed is an eternal wealth of the country and that the reed fields, which had been abandoned for thousands of years, should be reclaimed into priceless “silk fields”.
He outlined a grand plan on building a dike to link big and small islets and cultivate reed on thousands of hectares of newly-obtained tidelands and turning them into an ever-lasting raw material base.
One October day in Juche 52 (1963), when he summoned a consultative meeting of officials concerned with the construction of the Sinuiju Chemical Fibre Mill, he set forth a task to push forward the reed field project. He plainly referred to the importance and significance of reed production, saying that reed is like silk.
He paid another visit to the place one August day in Juche 55 (1966). Despite heavy rain and rough seas, he walked for hours on muddy paths to acquaint himself with the progress of the project. He stressed the need to employ machinery as suited to the features of local tidelands and marine conditions and build a dike by using concrete blocks.
True to his far-reaching plan, builders worked hard to build a “silk island”.
Every year, Sindo County produces large amounts of reed and sends them to the Sinuiju Chemical Fibre Mill.
