Among the best scientists and technicians of 2023 in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is Prof. Kang Jin U, PhD and department head of the Physics Faculty at Kim Il Sung University. He won the February 16 Sci-Tech Prize for his pivotal role in the studies of quantum gravitation, accelerated expansion of outer space, and generation of elementary particles.
When he finished a postgraduate course at the university in his early 20s, he took the research into condensed matters as his first project.
But he gradually got more interested in cosmology and theory of elementary particles.
While condensed-matter physics is the most basic and advanced field of modern physics, the theory of elementary particles is also at the forefront of the development of theoretical physics. Furthermore, the research into the theory was supposed to be conducted only by some established universities and research institutes in developed countries.
After careful deliberation he decided to venture into the field.
“I’ll explore the unknown world upon the honour of my university and the dignity of my country,” he said to himself.
However, he faced lots of troubles: he had to put in much time and effort only to consult a document. He refused to let the challenge get the better of him. He redoubled efforts and successfully conducted joint projects with foreign partners in frontier areas.
He tells his students that if they possess a high sense of national self-esteem and scientific ambition, they could surely lead the world in the studies of frontier basic sciences.
