An Sung Ho is a resident in Tonghan-ri, Koksan County, North Hwanghae Province. His family relies on the electricity produced by itself.
It has been more than 10 years since they began to produce electricity by setting up a water mill on a stream.
When he and his wife settled in the remote mountainous village, the biggest challenge they faced was a severe shortage of electricity. They made up their mind to address the problem on their own.
They turned the course of a stream running around their home into the yard and made a 1-metre head of water. Unfamiliar with this kind of work, they had a lot of difficulties to deal with, but finally they made it.
Since then, An’s family has never been dependent on the state’s power supply for lighting and other purposes.
Water flowing down from the mountain valley seldom freezes even in cold winter and if it does, only the surface freezes and therefore it does not affect the operation of the generator, explains An.
Besides, the water falling from the water mill is collected in a small pond in the yard, providing a favourable condition for raising fishes there in summer. Literally, Ri’s family is killing two birds with one stone.
The couple say to the visitors that anyone can easily produce electricity with a little effort and that they are planning to increase output by making a higher head and solving technical issues.
They’d like to contribute to the country’s economy even a bit, they add.
