In October 2001, the family of Pak Yong Chol in Poman-ri, Sohung County, North Hwanghae Province, were greatly excited to receive an answering message from Chairman Kim Jong Il (February 16, 1942-December 17, 2011). In the message the Chairman expressed thanks to them for informing him of good news.
The story goes back to one July day that year.
It was in early hours of the day that Kim Jong Il visited Poman-ri.
As he walked along a path in the dim light, he was so happy to see a newly built fish pond and the village of the ri seat. He said that a paradise is not something special and this village is a paradise and a socialist fairyland in the era of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
Upon arrival at the entrance of the village, he proposed to look into new houses and called at the house of Pak Yong Chol who worked at the farm with his wife.
He asked the couple where they had served the army, what they were doing at work, when they moved to the new house and how many children they had. After hearing their reply, he entered the room. He took a satisfactory look at varnished furniture items and household articles, and dropped in at the kitchen.
Watching every corner of the kitchen well arranged by the hostess, he said thoughtfully that it would be so good to boil rice with electricity in such a good house.
Looking round officials, he earnestly asked them to make all families cook meals electrically by raising the efficiency of the locally built power station. He told the farmer to write a letter to him when they can boil rice electrically after the completion of the electrification project.
Then he came out and had a photo taken with the farmer’s family.
Prior to departure, he warmly held the hands of the couple who thanked him and were reluctant to part from him, and asked them to write a letter to him without fail when they can prepare meals by using an electric rice cooker.
A few months later, the couple sent a letter to him to tell about their delight after all the families in the village had their rooms electrically heated and cooked meals with electricity.
