The DPRK is now directing efforts to developing mountain tourism in conformity with its natural and geographical conditions that 80 percent of its territory is occupied by mountainous areas.
A mountainous tourist complex is an area composed of tourist resorts with different functions like ski resort, mountaineering resort and hot spring resort.
A typical example in the DPRK is the Yangdok Hot Spring Resort.
Covering a wide area of almost two million square metres, the resort has scores of tempting indoor spa baths and over 30 outdoor spa baths where the visitors can have a bath under snow-covered pine trees savouring the emotions unique to winter and summer at the same time. Visitors can also receive mud, paraffin, sand, massage and other therapies which suit their constitutional features.
There are ski tracks on the slope of a nearby mountain, and at its foot are a horse-riding park and a service centre equipped with various facilities.
The charm of this resort lies in the fact that it gives the visitors the pleasure of spa bath, skiing and horse riding, all in one go.
As its name implies, an all-season mountainous tourist resort is a place where the visitors can conduct tourist activities distinctive in terms of seasonal features:
For example mountain hiking, cliff hanging, mountain biking, collecting mushrooms, wild fruits or edible herbs, parachuting in seasonal wind and sightseeing from the air on a balloon in spring and autumn; recuperation enjoying fresh alpine air in an ideal summer resort, hiking, camping, bathing and fishing in a mountain stream, adventurous sailing along rapids in upper reaches of a river in summer; skiing, sleighing, riding a sledge drawn by horses or dogs and mountain hiking in winter.
The country is now pushing forward projects for developing Samjiyon as a model of northern mountainous city and a characteristic all-season, mountainous tourist complex.
Paektu, Kumgang, Myohyang, Chilbo and Kuwol, Korea’s celebrated mountains designated as world biosphere reserves, have high prospect of being developed as major mountainous tourist resorts.
