A delegation of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the DPRK took part in the Russian Conference with International Participation on Molecular Oncology held in Russia in October 2008.
At the conference, the paper “Study on Development of the Tissue Protease Inhibitor Related with Cancer Growth” presented by a Korean medical scientist drew the attention of the participants and won top prize.
Until those days, various approaches were available for cancer treatment across the world.
One of the options was to apply molecular targeting medicine to cancer treatment.
The researchers at the Tumour Institute under the Academy of Medical Sciences deepened research into anticancer medicines, a matter of concern for the world medical experts. In the course of this, they were convinced that they could develop molecular targeting anticancer medicines effective for the treatment and prevention of cancer with Koryo medicinal stuff.
However, sophisticated pharmaceutical techniques were needed to produce such medicines with specific pharmacological mechanism.
The research team made painstaking efforts to develop molecular targeting anticancer medicine suited to the constitutional features of the Korean people with domestic Koryo medicinal stuff.
Ten years later, they succeeded in developing an anticancer injection made mainly with lightyellow sophora.
Not content with this, the research team developed another molecular targeting anticancer medicine, Baical skullcap and aralia anticancer tablet, to facilitate cancer treatment, lightyellow sophora and berberine anticancer injection efficacious for the treatment of pulmonary tumour and malignant pleural fluid, and other medicines.
These medicines kill cancer cells alone by containing specific enzymes discharged from cancer tissue and its surrounding parts without any negative impact on normal cells. They have helped many people suffering from gastric, liver, colon and other cancerous diseases live longer than expected and improve their conditions.
They are also effective for restraining the recurrence after medical operation.
“From olden times our nation has widely used animals, plants and other natural resources in the country for medical treatment. We are going to develop more anticancer medicines by relying on them,” said Dr Kim Myong Sun.
