One of the typical folk songs of the area of Kangwon Province, Hoeyang Nilliri was created by the people in the Hoeyang area of the province in reflection of their emotion during their creative working life and optimistic singing and dancing.
Still, the locals convey such a tale about the folk song.
Once upon a time, a woman in a village climbed over the rocky Chol Pass with her young child on her back to avoid a disturbance. She reached what is now the township of Hoeyang and found a shelter in an uninhabited forest, followed by one family after another to gradually form a big village.
She took great care of her child, who practised a martial art climbing up and down nearby mountains. He grew up to become a warrior. He swore to be brothers with young men in the village.
As they grew older, all of them except for him found their own fiancé but they could not but postpone their marriage due to their eldest brother.
Unable to wait any longer, the brothers turned out and wandered around to find a woman for their eldest brother. At last, they met a girl in Mt Kumgang, who was honest, warm-hearted, beautiful and polite. She immediately got on the good side of them.
They requested her to move to Hoeyang, and she readily accepted it. A few days later, she settled in their village, and over time she fell in love with their eldest brother.
On a clear, autumn day the brothers held a wedding all together. The mother of the warrior was so pleased that she danced singing “Nilliriga nilliri ninano nanoga nan nonya.”
Other village women joined her, dancing late into night. This originated Hoeyang Nilliri , which grew in popularity among locals as a cheerful dance music.
The folk song is widely sung in stage performances, economic motivational activities and other events, enriching the people’s cultural and emotional life, promoting unity and harmony among them and boosting their working morale.
It is on the local intangible heritage list.
