The third national meeting of active leaders of neighbourhood units was held in Pyongyang on March 16-17.

The meeting discussed practical ways in detail for making innovations in the work of dongs and neighbourhood units as required by the new era, true to the intention of the Workers' Party of Korea to further consolidate the cornerstone of the Korean-style socialist system centred on the masses of the people and the foundation of the DPRK government and build a comprehensively developed, prosperous state on its solid ground.

Present there were Pak Thae Song, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea and premier of the DPRK Cabinet, and other senior Party and government officials, exemplary leaders of neighbourhood units and chiefs of dong offices from across the country, officials of the provincial, city and county people's committees and officials concerned.

Premier Pak Thae Song made an opening address.

He expressed belief that the third national meeting of active leaders of neighbourhood units, convened in the historic period when policies for the comprehensive development of the state and the realization of all ideals of the people are being adopted and enforced and great changes are being made in the whole of socialist construction under the wise leadership of the great Party Central Committee, would mark an important occasion in bringing about a radical improvement in the work of dongs and neighbourhood units.

He stressed that the neighbourhood unit in the country is the lowest organization of social life linking the inhabitants with the people's power organs and the base of inhabitants' living and that the work to actively preserve the original features of the society starts from the neighbourhood units and it is guaranteed by their role.

The past 10-odd years that witnessed a new era of prosperity unprecedented in the history of the country were a proud period when signal progress was made in the work of dongs and neighbourhood units, he said.

The report introduced the inhabitants who preferentially treat the revolutionary seniors and meritorious persons with respect and display the beautiful traits of assisting the army, as well as the achievements and experience gained in finding out many reserves through an economy drive to positively contribute to socialist construction and in sprucing up streets and villages as socialist fairylands.

It referred to a series of deviations and lessons to be overcome without fail in the work of dongs and neighbourhood units.

Saying that they are faced with an important and urgent task to radically improve the work of dongs and neighbourhood units in line with the rapid development of the state making continuous leaps forward in all sectors and fields, the reporter referred to the ways for its fulfilment.

He called on the participants in the meeting and all other leaders of neighbourhood units throughout the country to work harder for the eternal prosperity of their great state, happy laughter of the beloved people and Korean-style socialism best in the world, bearing deep in mind the heavy mission they have assumed before the Party and the people.
