Chae Un Yong of the Wolmido Football Team is well known in the DPRK for her marvelous assisting skill.
The captain of the DPRK team played as No. 20 at the 2024 AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup, in which she won Golden Ball as the player of the tournament.
In football games good assist is as important as scoring.
That’s why experts weigh both scorer and assister.
Chae also played a dramatic role in the finals of the FIFA 2024 U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Around 15 minutes into the match she was attacking with the ball before she passed it to Choe Il Son, who was dashing towards the right side of the field.
Choe skilfully dribbled past defenders and turned to successfully kick the ball into the net with her left foot.
Experts attributed Chae’s astonishing success in each match to her high sense of sportsmanship, strong physical preparedness and skilled dribbling. And they wondered if she was born into a sportsman’s family.
However, her parents were more interested in arts than sports.
They were surprised when their youngest and only daughter of three children said she wanted to play football.
Chae acquired basic football skills at the Hungdok District Extracurricular Sports School in the city of Hamhung. She was crazy about football.
She was recruited into the Wolmido Football Team in her teens.
Her rapid progress made her join the senior team and play at international tournaments. She won the 2023 AFC women’s most valuable junior player prize, for the third time in the country, after the Amnokgang Sports Club’s Ra Un Sim and the Pyongyang Sports Club’s Sung Hyang Sim.
She was among those labour innovators and persons of merit who had the honour of having a photo taken with the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un before the headquarters building of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea on the occasion of the New Year 2025.
