A special natural cave has been discovered in Iryong-ri, Kowon County, South Hamgyong Province.
It is located on the side of an eastern mountain of the Puktaebong Mountains, about 8km away from the seat of Iryong-ri.
The entrance of the cave is about 1.5 metres wide and 2 metres high. Inwardly it widens up to 15 metres. But in some part it narrows to 0.5 metre.
It is a karst cave formed under the influence of underground water in the limestone area. The main part of the cave is over 240 metres long. And the cave consists of four short branches and three vertical ones.
Experts have divided the cave into five sections in consideration of narrowed or curved parts and others. Each section is dotted by masses of yellow, white and black stalagmites and stalactites which come in various shapes and sizes, presenting a spectacular view.
The cave is distinctively smaller in scale and shorter in length than Ryongmun Cave in Kujang County, North Phyongan Province, and Songam Cave in Kaechon, South Phyongan Province, but it has more spectacular objects—a myriad of stalagmites and stalactites of ornamental value in the length running only hundreds of metres.
Also peculiar are stone pillars.
The cave is believed to have been formed long ago, given that it was formed by corrosion, its stalagmites and stalactites created by sedimentation and some of them growing to merge into stone pillars.
Officials, teachers and researchers at the National Authority for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, Kim Il Sung University, Kim Chaek University of Technology and the State Academy of Sciences made a joint survey of the cave and came to a conclusion that the cave will be of greater academic and ornamental value than Rakchon Cave in Kowon County and Chonryong Cave in Yodok County which were registered as natural monuments.
The new cave has been named “Iryong Cave” and registered as natural monument No. 256.
