The Korean people displayed unrivalled bravery and mass heroism during the Fatherland Liberation War (1950–1953) against the US-led imperialist invaders, mercilessly crushing them and defending their territory at the risk of their lives. The hard-fought war produced as many as 627 heroes.
Among them are those who blocked the enemy’s pillboxes with their bodies to open up the route of charge for their units. One of them threw himself into the enemy’s position with a hand grenade in his mouth when his two arms were wounded. A nurse threw herself beneath an enemy tank with a clutch of grenades and blew herself and the tank up. A pilot flew his burning aircraft straight to an enemy warship.
A company of coast artillerymen defended Wolmi Island for three days, with only four guns at that, against 50 000-strong forces with about 1 000 aircraft and hundreds of warships. A flotilla of four torpedo boats attacked and sank Baltimore, US Navy’s heavy cruiser with a displacement of 17 300 tons.
The world people praised the Korean people and the KPA as a heroic people and heroic KPA.
What made them fight so bravely?
Ri Su Bok, an 18-year-old soldier who silenced an enemy pillbox with his chest to secure the charge of his unit, wrote a poem as follows: “I am a young man of liberated Korea. Life is precious. So is my hope for a bright future. But my life, my hope and my happiness are no more precious than the destiny of my country. Would there be any life, hope or happiness nobler, greater or more beautiful than giving up my youth for my only country?”
The Fatherland Liberation War showed that no force on earth could defeat the people who rise up as one under the guidance of an outstanding leader and risk their lives to defend their country and system with confidence in the validity of their cause.
