Researchers, postgraduates and students of Pyongyang University of Architecture distinguished themselves in the international research and design contest in the field of architecture and urban construction held in Russia from October last year to May this year.

They won top and first prizes, 8 in all, for their architectural layouts and scientific papers.

The layout “Architectural space composition combined with waterscape” by students Kim Ryong and Ri Kwon Ju and researcher Om Song Hyok, the winner of the top prize, covers a modern city with unique-style skyscrapers, high-rise apartments, public buildings and various types of waterscape in harmonious arrangement.

It was not easy at all for them to create scientific designing principles and techniques of architectural space composition that goes well with the waterscape.

They paid special attention to every single line and dot so as to avoid repetition and highlight modern and artistic qualities in planning residential quarters, parks and waterscape.

Whenever they faced problems in designing, they toured the stylish streets recently built in the capital city of their country as representatives of modern civilization to find solutions. In this way they made painstaking efforts to complete the layout, which earned them admiration among the jury during the contest.

The layout “Combination of creation-oriented industry and urban space” by student Choe Un Ju and researcher Ri Ye Gon was awarded the first prize. They visited the Kangdong Combined Greenhouse Farm on a suburb of the capital city to choose the theme of their work.

Going round the greenhouse farm, they decided to create a plan modelled after the modern industrial base harmoniously combined with dwelling houses, educational and cultural facilities, parks and others.

They worked hard to produce a layout of a city of a new style with a harmonious combination of multi-functional modern buildings, while making an in-depth morphological analysis of global innovative urban areas and operational factors.

Finally they, with the devoted help of university and faculty officials, completed the layout, marked by a formative and artistic combination of typical innovative industrial establishments and architectural structures such as peculiar architectural groups, midair flower garden and overpass.

Among the first prize winners were the paper “Preparation and application of harmful gas adsorbent using ashes from thermal power plant” by Wi Chung Jin, a student of the university, and the layouts “Architectural planning and design of rural residential areas based on biological and climatic features” and “Study of artistic reciprocity, compatibility and connectivity by symbolic buildings.”
