Post-liberation Oldie Proves Its Vitality

Korea’s liberation on August 15, 1945 from the Japanese military rule was a historic event that put an end to the distress-torn history of the country and opened up a new era for it.

With hilarity and enthusiasm running high for building a new Korea growing across the country, many good songs that reflected the sentiment of the times were created. Among them is the song The Glorious Motherland (1947), written by Pak Se Yong and composed by Ri Myon Sang.

As a hymn to the motherland that was created together with the national anthem of the DPRK, it is a song of national value which left its mark in the history of the country and the initial annals of its music.

It sings of the ardent love for the beautiful motherland with a 5 000-year history, brilliant culture and glorious tradition of struggle, and the honour and happiness of holding in high esteem the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung who won back the country from the Japanese imperialists and brought freedom, happiness and the delight of a new life to the people who had been subjected to humiliation and oppression. It also depicts the firm, unanimous will of the people to add eternal glory to their country following his leadership.

It conveys great delight of the Korean people that took the place of the pent-up sorrow, tears and grief they had experienced suffering the destiny of colonial slavery over decades, and it also honours the blood shed by the anti-Japanese revolutionary martyrs who devoted their youth and lives to the fight to win back the country.

Created under the direct guidance of Kim Il Sung the year before the DPRK was founded, the song greatly inspired the Korean people to give full play to their burning patriotic zeal and extraordinary creative abilities in their efforts to build an independent, sovereign state.

As the song gives a vivid description of the Korean people’s independent and creative demand, aspiration and the resultant burning patriotic mind to build their country into a socialist power, it is demonstrating its tremendous vitality through generations along with the prosperity of the DPRK.
