Today many countries are directing much effort to educating and training talented personnel for space science and technology in line with the accelerating space exploration around the world.
The United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, a major space-related international body, also actively promotes international cooperation in the space science and technology education.
As a typical example, the space congress held in 1982 decided to set up six regional bases for space science and technology education in developing countries, and in 2015 the committee met on the agenda item “Space 2030” and set a goal of space development to be attained by 2030 in which it underscored the need to develop the education in space science and technology.
For this reason many countries have institutes under their space development agencies or give education in space engineering in their universities.
The DPRK has set it as a principle to solve all the problems arising in the development and uses of space entirely by its own efforts, technology and resources, and promoted the training of talented personnel for space science and technology.
A provision of the Law of the DPRK on Space Development adopted in December 2012 stipulates the need to direct due efforts to the scientific research and education in the space science and technology sector.
Accordingly, a national space science and technology symposium of scientists, technicians and university teachers engaged in space development is held on a yearly basis, and efforts are devoted to applying the excellent papers and sci-tech data presented at the symposium to education.
Kim Il Sung University set up courses for training talents in aerospace science in its different faculties and started relevant education in 2017. Later, it established the Aerospace Science Faculty by grouping together those courses.
Meanwhile, Kim Chaek University of Technology has founded the Aerospace Engineering Faculty.
The faculties of the two universities are giving postgraduate education (including master’s and doctor’s courses) as well as normal courses according to the educational system. And they are giving relevant education to the teachers and researchers who have obtained a doctor’s degree so as to train them into world-class scholars.
