The Paektusan Secret Camp is a secret base that the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung used as the centre of activities of the main-force unit of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army during the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle, and a sacred place of the revolution where the great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il was born.
The camp nestles in the dense forest of the Sobaeksu Valley at the foot of Mt Paektu in Ryanggang Province’s Samjiyon City.
When Kim Il Sung led the anti-Japanese armed struggle, he unfolded a grand plan of building a central base for leading the overall Korean revolution in the area of Mt Paektu and dispatched excellent military and political officials to the area.
In late September 1936, he went to the Sobaeksu Valley to give guidance over the construction of the secret camp.
From the latter half of the 1930s until the accomplishment of the historic cause of national liberation on August 15, 1945, Kim Il Sung took the camp as a strategic base for leading the Korean revolution and led the overall Korean revolution centred on the anti-Japanese armed struggle to brilliant victory.
In the camp there are the log cabin of the KPRA headquarters, the site of the headquarters tent, the log cabin where Kim Jong Il was born, barracks of guerrillas and slogan-bearing trees.
Kim Jong Il was born in the log cabin in the camp on February 16, 1942.
Preserved in his native home are a wooden pistol and other toys he played with in his childhood, a low table and a small chest placed with a patchwork quilt and blankets presented by the KPRA soldiers to him, as well as a military tin, a water pail and other kitchen utensils used by the anti-Japanese war heroine Kim Jong Suk.
Though many decades have passed since it was built in the primeval forest of Mt Paektu, the camp is still preserved in its original appearance, conveying the sacred revolutionary history and undying exploits of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il .
