Wihwa Island located in the northwestern part of the DPRK is now better known across the country.
Rescued Flood Victims
In late July 2024 flood struck the whole swathe of Wihwa Island, leaving thousands of islanders trapped in a sea of water. At this juncture, helicopters of the Korean People’s Army Air Force flew over to the island to rescue all of the victims in an unbelievably successful operation.
The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un oversaw the rescue operation until the last one of the victims was airlifted, while standing for a long time in the air base the flood was approaching closer every minute. The operation was a miracle in the history of the world air rescue operations, and the story is still moving the people.
Cradle of Life
The flood-stricken area of the island gave way to a modern rural town in December that year. Every flood victim moved into a new house.
Single- and multi-storey houses, nursery, kindergarten, school, hospital, clinic and other neighbourhood-serving amenities were built on the afflicted area, an embankment was fortified along the Amnok River, and the railway and roads were repaired. As a result, the island turned into an ideal rural town.
Throughout the restoration campaign, many of the flood victims including children and elderly were taken to Pyongyang where they enjoyed their staying free from worries under the special care of the state.
So excited to receive new houses from the state for free, they shouted in tears “Long live socialism!” and “Long live the Workers’ Party of Korea!”
New Life, New Civilization
In December 2024, Kim Jong Un attended the inauguration ceremony of the new houses in the stricken area of North Phyongan Province, in which he unveiled a large-scale greenhouse farm project designed to ensure a cultured and happy life of the residents.
Accordingly, a groundbreaking ceremony of a large-scale greenhouse farm and a vegetable science research centre took place on February 10, 2025. After a little over a year the Sinuiju Combined Greenhouse Farm sprang up with at least a thousand greenhouses of different kinds, a vegetable processing factory, storage facilities, a sci-tech research and dissemination base, greenhouses for pilot cultivation and other buildings sprawling over 450 hectares.
Every farmer is so excited that they say to visitors they are working merrily at this wonderful “greenhouse factory” and labour is just music and pleasure to them.
Today the combined greenhouse farm is turning out various sorts of vegetables, enriching the dietary life of the islanders.
