Mt Kumgang, a famous mountain of the DPRK, boasts Sujong Peak (775 metres above sea level), whose name was derived from a tale that the whole mountain shined like a crystal.
The mountain slopes down gently at the foot and inclines sharply upward with a steep angle of 65-70° at the peak. The top of the mountain consists of a single rock mass resemblant to an upside-down jar, while the lower part of it is covered with thick forests of pine, oak, maple and painted maple trees.
Alongside the climbing road are lying waterfalls, 20-30 metres high, Jara Rock and Pidulgi Rock.
There is the Sujong Gate near the ridge of the peak. It is the largest natural stone gate in Mt Kumgang, a monolith 2-3 metres thick and approximately 10 metres wide and high respectively. The arch-style gate is studded with crystals. If you pass through the gate and go further up an iron ladder on the cliff, you will see Kangson Rock, on which hundreds of people can seat.
The observation platform on Sujong Peak commands splendid views of Mt Kumgang.
The peak is one of the popular tourist attractions.
