Visitors are admiring Wihwa Island which has been transformed beyond recognition.

The small island located in the northwestern border area of the DPRK was prone to flood in the past.

It was severely hit by flood in July 2024.

Inspecting the flooded area on a small rubber boat, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un resolutely said that everything in the area should be newly built and once decided, a good design should be worked out to turn the area into a fairyland to be envied by all, calling for carrying out the historic task into a historic implementation.

Thanks to his painstaking efforts, modern high- and low-storey apartment houses, nursery, kindergarten, school, hospital, clinic and other facilities sprang up in the afflicted area in a matter of several months.

At the inauguration ceremony of the dwelling houses in the afflicted area in North Phyongan Province in December that year, Comrade Kim Jong Un unveiled a grand new construction plan for transforming the area to ensure that the local people could lead a more civilized and happier life in the new rural town.

In February the following year he attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the large-scale greenhouse farm and vegetable science research centre to be built on the island, in which he dug the first spadeful of earth and pressed the button for blasting. Afterwards, he visited the construction site repeatedly to make sure that the project was finished flawlessly.

As a result, the island area once vulnerable to natural disaster has turned into an ideal farm city of the new era in 500-odd days.

A fortified embankment stretched out, the Sinuiju Combined Greenhouse Farm and the vegetable science research centre were built, hundreds of hectares of rape field were unfolded and the area was covered with at least 150 000 trees and flowering plants of good species.

Through the construction of the Sinuiju Combined Greenhouse Farm, we have more deeply realized the truthfulness and great power of self-sustenance and self-determination and come to more clearly observe the level of the working spirit and creativity we have firmly cemented and cultivated, Comrade Kim Jong Un said in January this year. And he expressed his firm will to more ambitiously plan the undertakings for the promotion of the wellbeing of the people across the country and radical transformation of the regions and strenuously implement them.

Delivering his policy speech at the First Session of the 15th Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK in March, he solemnly pledged to make all sincere efforts to promote the prosperity and development of the state and the wellbeing of the people.
